Man’s Search for Meaning: A Book Review

Image
One of the best books to be included in our must-reading list is Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning . It may be considered an autobiography as it narrates the author's struggle during the Nazi Occupation in Austria. The author's narrative of his experience at the concentration camp effectively arrests the consciousness of a reader who is searching for meaning out of his life. The author and a psychotherapist himself is so honest and straightforward in his experiences which according to Dr. Allport "rest on experiences too deep for deception" and that one is drawn to reflect and examine his own experiences too. He then directs the reader to an introduction to logotherapy which he can use as a guide to answering the question confronted by life to him as well or used to help others carve the meaning of their own experience. More than an autobiography, it is a self-help book and a training-book considering that it gives advice on how to help other...

Blink: The power of thinking without thinking by Malcolm Gladwell

This book about tapping the power of the instinct and the subconscious not that of Freud was read in 3 seatings. I bought this in Soekarno Hatta International Airport and started reading it since the started reading it there while waiting for the next flight to Pekanbaru last 8 February. Then, I continued reading it while traveling to Dumai and while in the port of Dumai and Bandar Bakau last 9 February and finished it today 17 February. The first seating allowed me to go through the introduction which talks about the technique of thin slicing in the case of the kouros - a Greek statue believed to be something that belongs to the ancient but was in fact fake.  The next seating is dedicated to reading the stories that support the idea of thin slicing and the dangers of thin slicing in the case of political decisions, hospital determination of chest pain sickness, military strategy, police operations, and the world of music's entertainment of women orchestra instru...

Travel Pekanbaru - Kuala Lumpur - Jakarta - Pekanbaru

Image
From 6 to 8 February 2019 I traveled from Pekanbaru to Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur to arrange for a working visa in Indonesia. I am with my cousin who is also processing his visa for work. This blog is all about tri-city travels and some side trips. 1. Pekanbaru to Kuala Lumpur From the house at 7:05 which is too early for our 10:55 local time. It is still early and the holiday for the Chinese New Year is just finished so there is not much traffic. From Jalan Riau, we reached the airport at 7:40 AM which is still too early. So we waited for the opening of the booth for the Air Asia printing of our boarding passes since we already had online check-in. The booth opened at 10:00 and the boarding passes were printed quickly. We then proceeded to the boarding gate and the flight went on time at 10:55. We reached Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA2) in 40 minutes; the local time was 12:45. We then proceed to reserve for a bus to KL Sentral. It is 12 MY...

Visiting Dumai, Riau, Indonesia

Image
It was still holiday after coming from Kuala Lumpur, and I still wanted to spend the rest of it near the sea. So I visited Dumai from 9 to 11 February 2019. Pekanbaru to Duri Full of enthusiasm in anticipation for the sea/beach experience, I headed for Dumai from Pekanbaru from 12:30. The trip from Pekanbaru to Dumai is around 7 hours with many stopovers of the oplet  supposedly to collect passengers. The trip passes by kelapa sawit plantations of the entire Riau area including some parts of Bengkalis Regency. Different sizes of pipelines follow the road from Pekanbaru to the Port of Dumai. I have also seen two areas of oil wells along the way. Two distinct town centers were seen before approaching the Dumai, the second largest city in Riau province: these are Kandis and Duri. In Duri, the oplet  transferred us to another oplet . Duri to Dumai Duri to Dumai is approximately 60 kilometers more. That time the  oplet was much faster than the previous one. It ...
